The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) and the Association of Pork Producers in Romania (APCPR) signed, on March 26, 2026, a cooperation protocol aimed at combating African swine fever (ASF) and protecting the swine sector. The initiative comes in a context where the evolution of the disease continues to affect domestic production and the operational capacity of Romanian farms.

The agreement establishes a working framework focused on prevention and rapid intervention. The announced measures include the development of practical biosecurity guidelines for farms, the involvement of veterinarians in advising farmers, the оператив transmission of information regarding outbreaks and restrictions, as well as the organization of continuous dialogue between authorities and professional organizations. The objective is to limit the spread of the virus and maintain the stability of the pork market.

The importance of this partnership is linked to the current situation of Romania’s swine sector. Public data indicate a high dependence on imports, given that domestic production covers only part of consumption needs. At the same time, economic pressure on farms has increased, while market volatility has been amplified by disease outbreaks and rising production costs.

From a sanitary perspective, African swine fever remains the main risk factor for the sector. In the absence of a vaccine authorized at the European level, disease control relies on strict biosecurity measures, monitoring, and rapid intervention in outbreaks. Their effectiveness depends directly on cooperation between authorities and farmers.

The ANSVSA–APCPR partnership reflects a shift toward a co-management model between public institutions and the private sector. The consistent implementation of measures in the field and the active involvement of farmers will determine the real impact of this initiative on reducing sanitary risks and strengthening domestic pork production.
