The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) hosted, this week, a working meeting with representatives of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the General Secretariat of the Government, within the framework of the project “Improving the Inspection System in Romania: A Coherent Regulatory Framework.” The initiative is implemented by the OECD, in collaboration with the General Secretariat of the Government, and financed through the European Commission’s SG Reform programme.

According to ANSVSA, the activities carried out between May 11–13, 2026 and on May 19, 2026 include technical sessions at both the central institutional level and within DSVSA Prahova, aiming to strengthen and modernize the inspection system, with a focus on developing a more efficient and coherent regulatory framework.

The discussions between OECD experts and ANSVSA specialists focused primarily on risk-based inspection tools. Among the topics addressed were the classification of operators according to risk, the evaluation sheets used in inspection activities, classification methods applied in the fields of food safety and animal health and welfare, as well as the activity carried out at Border Control Points.

OECD representatives presented to ANSVSA management the next stages of the project through 2027 and appreciated the institution’s involvement in implementing the activities carried out so far. At the same time, the technical dialogue focused on possibilities for improving the tools used in risk-based inspections and on the methodological support that the OECD can continue to provide to Romanian authorities.

The project is part of the broader process of aligning administrative and control mechanisms with international standards regarding regulatory efficiency and supervision. For the agri-food sector, modernizing the inspection system has direct implications for product traceability, the predictability of inspections, and strengthening confidence in the food safety system.
